Zuwena Standard 5 & Jamila Standard 4

The original two sisters who back in 2011 were of school age but not attending school due to the choice of the father. The father was an alcoholic and wanted to have the children home to help take care of him. When I left Tanzania after my first volunteer trip I felt like I was abandoning them to their fate of never getting an education. Two years later,  I had a job offer in my pocket and within a week of graduating I went on my first trip back with the mission to sponsor these two sisters. When I arrived, I received word that the father had died of malaria and they were now living with a relative. In talking with the relative we decided that boarding school would be the best option for them as they were now 3-4 years behind in their education and could really benefit from after school activities. In 2016 I went to visit them again. In those moments, it made all the money and traveling worth it for me. I will never forget those moment of speaking English with them and hearing how they were working hard to catch up and one day be the top of their class.
